The Center for Informatics and Standards, is a branch of ADA practice Institute whose work is to provide insight on various issues regarding health informatics particularly dental informatics. These issues include policy development, guidance to federal agencies on proposed new regulations, educational outreaches and dental informatics standards development activities. Their expertise ranges from Electronic Health Record systems to digital imaging standards and health information exchange with their staff actively participating at regulatory, industry and standard groups with a view of promoting ADA policies and representing the needs of member dentists.
At the moment, an opportunity exists for dentistry to shape the standards and technologies it would adopt in the near future. The ADA is utilizing this opportunity to define dental information technology capabilities through provision of educational resources to its members especially in the regulatory and standards arena. Interoperability of EHR systems has a huge potential of improving health care provision as more information as well as quality information is made easily available for care providers for better decision-making.
