Targeted Objective 

Specific HP 2010 objective: To Increase the awareness of the Florida adolescent health risks and to provide education on mitigating mortality rates, mental illness, and diseases with adverse effects for adolescents in Miami Dade County and will use a case study of Miami Senior High School.

Description of Targeted Community 

Miami Senior high School will be a good representative of Miami-Dade County. Miami-Dade is a county in the state of Florida. The county is located in the southern parts of the United States Mainland. It is a county that has a population of more than 2 million citizens and it is the most populous in the state. This means that it is a state that also has the highest numbers of adolescents. The adolescents form about 12% of the general population in this county. Out of these adolescents, in every 100 females there are about 90 males. Typically, adolescence is any person between the age of 13 and 19. The latter could vary between girls and boys. Adolescence is a stage in life where a person translates from childhood to becoming an adult. Many psychosomatic and bodily changes are evident in this stage. The period often brings about issues of self-identity and incentives of independence. They face tough choices vis-à-vis drugs, social life, and sexuality.

According to the Minino (2010), there are about 16 000 adolescents who died in the US from 1999 to 2006. Noting that, on average, about 1% of American citizens die every year. Some of the leading causes of deaths among adolescents are accidents, suicide, heart diseases, and cancer. Accidents usually account for almost a third of these deaths. The death of adolescents is a public issue in the United States in general. In addition, it appears that all these deaths can be mitigated or prevented. The latter is a big risk because these deaths account for more than a third of all deaths in the nation. The study aims at bringing a program that will try to correct this.

Social economic factors 

There are numerous factors that cause deaths and mental illnesses among the youth and social economic entities play a big role in this. Mental diseases are also becoming very common in Florida. Some of the illnesses are severe and others are not according to NAMI (2019), “Roughly one in five youths aged 13–18 (21.4%) experiences a severe mental disorders at some point during their life. For children aged 8–15, the estimation is 13%”. These statistics indicate that a lot should be done in the attempts of ensuring that the adolescents are free from such mental illnesses. Some of the diseases that they suffer also include bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, major depression episodes, posttraumatic stress disorders, specific phobias, and obsessive-compulsive disorders.

Lack of treatment is one of the reasons for the high numbers mental health illnesses. Economic status is another element that causes these diseases. Education dropouts also face these disorders. Mental health sometimes is leads to suicide (Hallfors et al, 2004). It is therefore imperative to try to bring awareness to the youths with attempts trying to make sure that they treated and how they can avoid some mental illnesses especially those related to stress. The following is the sample program intervention plan sample that can be used to execute the plan of communicating to the adolescents. The study will use a sample size of 300 adolescents. The adolescents will be from various parts of Miami, some from the suburbs others in the neighborhoods and will incorporate the whites, African Americans, Hispanics and other races.

DESCRIPTION OF HEALTH PROMOTION/INTERVENTION PROGRAM 

Participants 

There are many adolescents who live in Miami-Dade county of Florida. There are whites, African Americans, Hispanics and other races. Predominantly the adolescents form more than 10% of the population in the county. The data was collected from https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/miamidadecountyflorida , a website that gives updated information about general statics of the county. The focus group entailed all people between the age of 13 and 19. The study identified other organizations to see what help they can provide or how they can commit themselves to the plan. Some of the organizations consulted are the States medical office and Miami hospital. The study will use a sample size of 300 adolescents. The location for the sample intervention sample will be at Miami Dade College. All the participants will be interviewed at a personal and disclosed level before the commencement of the program.

Health Education Sessions 

After the interviews the education sessions will commence. They will entail various modifications and improvements that are related to adolescence deaths and mental illnesses (Office of Adolescent health). Lessons will be conducted by County health officials and doctors from the Ministry of health and will consist of about seven lessons. The first lesson will be taught in the beginning of the semester and the components of the intervention will be taught once in a week. The participants will be given study notes and experiments after the lessons.

There will be demonstrations related to ways of overcoming deaths among the youth. Others will indicate ways of fighting and mitigating mental and severe illnesses among the youth. In other handouts there will be notes about the overall requirements of the course. In some of these meetings the parents, guardians, and teachers will be asked to attend so that they can become knowledgeable too.

Adolescent deaths and Mental Illnesses Curriculum 

The curriculum will be a combination of the two target lessons one about the deaths and the other about mental illnesses and severe diseases. The Curriculum will be borrowed from Teen Mental health (2009).

Lesson 1 : During the course of the first lesson the participants will be taught more about the stigma of mental illnesses and adult deaths. They will also be taught several things that relate to the cause of deaths among the adolescents.

Lesson 2 : in this lesson there will be a dipper discussion on why adolescents commit suicide and get involved in accidents. It is also in this lesson where they will be taught several incentives that relate to the causes of mental illnesses and other dangerous illnesses.

Lesson 3 : In this lesson the teachers and parents will be guided on some of the ways they can prepare young teens into adulthood. They will be taught several issues relating to drugs, alcoholism and peer pressure. After the lesson the student are given handouts that have notes related to overcoming drug abuse, alcoholism and peer pressure.

Lesson 4: This is the lesson where the participants will be taught more about the experiences of mental illnesses and how people can live with adolescents who depict mental illnesses. In this lesson several videos and graphics will be shown to the participants. It will be a lesson educating the participants some of the ways through which they can support and enable people who are ill mentally to live normal lives.

Lesson 5 : it will take about sixty minutes. This will be a lesson where the participants will be taught more ways of overcoming the mental health problems holistically. They will be directed to various resources such as websites and books where they can read more about the mitigation of adolescent challenges. They will be encouraged to always have in mind that mental illnesses can be cured and all forms of deaths can be avoided. The tutor of this lesson will also briefly touch on the feeding and diet patterns that can help adolescents avoid deadly diseases such as heart attacks and diabetes.

Lesson six : The participants will give short tests to test their understanding. The tests will be oral and others will be written. However there will be no grading. It will enable the tutors to discover the level of understanding and if the latter can apply it in day-to-day activities.

Lesson 7: it will be a one hour class where the intervention will be concluded. The participants will ask questions and they will be asked to ensure that they share the knowledge with other people.

Mitigation lessons 

An extra lesson where the participants will be sent messages in their emails will also be available after the fifth lesson. The messages will entail practical ways fighting off the causes of deaths and severe illnesses among the adolescents. There will be links to some of the activities that can be completed like communication, sharing experiences with adults and avoiding bad influence.

Conclusion 

In conclusion, the analysis above has given a comprehensive review of the health promotion program plan. The latter has shown why it is vital to increase the awareness of adolescent health risks and provide education on mitigating mortality rates, mental illness, and diseases with adverse effects on adolescents in Miami-Dade County. The idea here is ensure that the adolescents who live in this state live a product life. It has used the ideas of sample size and program intervention plans to come up with accurate ways of achieving various objectives of the study. The proposed program is viable and should be implemented as soon as possible. The application of this program is also in line with the goals and objectives of health care services.
