Home-based care would be a more appropriate service program as compared to long-term care for various reasons. First, the overall cost is lower for home-based care compared to the long-term arrangement. As the older person remains at home, he/she spends less in terms of food, personal services, and medication. Some long-term programs may charge highly but fail to offer the required services. Free services offered by family members also contribute significantly to reducing the cost of caring for the older adult. This arrangement prevents financial manipulation that may occur for the older person as in some long-term care programs.
Secondly, in home-based care, a person can choose the caregiver to offer the required services compared to a long-term program. This advantage means that the older person receives the necessary aid from a person he/she trusts, thus minimizing the possibility of abuse. This feature may not be available in long-term care with an individual relying on different caregivers. Further one may prefer home-based care due to the close supervision and monitoring an older person receives from family members(Elkan et al., 2001). They would watch over such a person on daily basis to ensure no mental or physical abuse occurs to him/her. Another advantage of home-based care is that the family can tailor it to suit the older adult's exact needs. One receives one on one services which fit his/her unique preferences and requirements. Lastly, the older adult receives the necessary services at the comfort of their houses in a home-based care program. One does not need to move to an unknown location to get the appropriate care, as it is the case with some long-term care programs. Having those services at the preferred facilities enables the older adult to develop trust in the caregiver, thus avoiding possible abuse.
