The principle standard advocated by National Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services Standards (CLAS) is the provision equitable, effective, understandable and dignified quality care and services that are cognizance of diversity in cultural beliefs in health, respective languages, literacy in health as well as other needs in healthcare communication. My peers and I, are flexible enough to accommodate the differences in culture and health beliefs. As a result, we provide customized care in labor and delivery for mother’s having babies.

The other principal advocated by CLAS is in relation to governance, leadership and workforce. It maintains that every personnel should be able employ diversity in support of the respective culture with differences in linguistic and “responsive to the population in the service area” (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health, 2011). On our part, during recruitment, one of the qualification criteria used by the leaders was to determine our knowledge and views on culture and linguistic of the people on our service area. By so doing, the managers were interested in ensuring that the workforce is responsive to the people of the service region.

The National CLAS Standards also emphasize on communication and language assistance. In this case, anybody maternal mother who cannot express herself in English is offered the necessary help to facilitate effective communication in care delivery. Most of my colleagues are conversant with more than one international language which enables us to serve mothers in labor who cannot express themselves in English.

In order to improve cultural competence in your organization we can obtain a certificate in cultural competence. This would help us to increase our knowledge, awareness and skills through certain cultural training, seminar, and workshop. Besides, we can make use of journals, internet, books; which are important resources in improving cultural competence.
