Many people assume African Americans are united on all issues because they have been victims of oppression for a long period. For instance, a high level of segregation of African American people is an evident occurrence in the United States. They have been victims of slavery; have experienced poverty, lower-class issues, crisis in black leadership, and economic and cultural inequality. These problems have been experienced across the African American community and thus, it is believed they are united in fighting for these issues affecting them. The unification of African Americans happened in American history during the civil rights movement that was established for fighting for equal rights for African Americans. The Civil rights movement united most African Americans who were determined to achieve equal rights and fight against oppression and segregation (Frontline, 2014).

Improving the situation of African Americans has resulted in significant differences and conflicts among them. For instance, some indicate that to address the challenges affecting African Americans, restoration of values is advocated. In addition, it is stated that capitalism can help in resolving the economic and structural inequality challenges facing African Americans.   Others have pointed out that African Americans can take charge of their lives and engage in business to eradicate the challenge of poverty and lower class crisis. Moreover, it is advocated that African Americans should be educated as well as improve the black leadership. Furthermore, it is recommended for African Americans to build on their traditions of collective community and social justice to change the society. These factors split up in the 1980s and 1990s because of the differences in opinions regarding how to address the situations using either current methods and tactics or traditional methods (Frontline, 2014).

Gender and sexuality affect African Americans today in the sense that they tend to hold traditional gender and sexuality ideologies. For instance, women and men are assigned specific tasks and behaviors that should adhere. Based on the CDC statistics, women who embrace the traditional gender ideas have a high likelihood of engaging in sexual behaviors that makes them susceptible to risk of contracting HIV (CDC, 2018).
