The programs differed significantly in their levels of aggressive and prosocial behavior. The children’s cartoon had no incident of aggressive behavior and had an hourly rate of 21 for prosocial behavior. This meant that the viewers were exposed to prosocial behavior alone and being a cartoon meant for children, it serves to impact the children positively by encouraging them to act in a more prosocial manner. The teaching program and the adult program showed higher levels of aggressive behavior than the cartoon with the adult program having nearly four times the number of aggressive behavior than the teaching program. They also varied in the prosocial behavior rate with the teaching program posting a higher incidence of prosocial behaviors(72) than aggressive behaviors(27). The adult program had significantly less prosocial behaviors (54) compared to the aggressive behaviors witnessed (135). These programs could have different impacts on their viewers with the teaching program promoting more prosocial behaviors in their viewers, specifically, how to better coexist with other people. The adult program, on the other hand, would promote aggression in its viewers due to the high number of aggressive behaviors with a lower rate of prosocial behavior. It would require an individual who is quite principled and not easily swayed by what they see to avoid getting into these aggressive behaviors in the adult program (222 words).
Incidences of aggression and prosocial behaviors are all across the various media channels and can be easily displayed through the behaviors of characters in the program. The actions of characters in tv programs are a huge channel for promoting behavior, even more than the words they utter. I believe the levels of prosocial behavior and aggression displayed in these programs are a good indicator of what is seen in everyday interactions. Little aggression and more prosocial behaviors in content meant for children while high aggression and relatively low prosocial behavior in adult programs. Violence and aggression have become a common phenomenon in adult programs making it even more important to have age-restrictions for tv programs and online content accessible to children (122 words).
It was interesting to see the varying levels of aggression displayed in adult movies evidenced by how hard it was to count all the aggressive acts in a 20-minute session. It was relatively easy analyzing the children’s content. As for the results of the analysis, bias could have a huge impact since one’s preferred choice of programs could determine whether they choose a program with high levels of aggression and prosocial behaviors. Therefore, the results could be different for different people. The average findings if the analysis was done by many people would still most likely show a high incidence of aggression in adult programs and relatively lower prosocial behavior. Cartoons could also post a slightly higher rate of aggression depending on what cartoons one chooses to analyze. (129 words)
