To source materials and move products when it comes to international shipping, a company has to make choices. The most important decision is choosing the kind of transport to use between sea freight and air freight. There are fundamental factors to consider when making this decision.

Cost is one of the factors considered in the choice of a freight option. Naturally, one don’t have to be told to consider the cost before any undertaking. As a business person you will always want to know which will cost less, sea freight or air freight. Making the best decision helps businesses to know how carriers charge for international shipping. Airlines bills by chargeable weight which is calculated by combining weight and the size of the shipment. Sea shippers charge per container rates for shipping in standard containers. With larger and heavier shipments, it is cheap to ship by sea. The prices gets smaller as shipments gets smaller and sometimes air shipment ends up less expensive.

The second factor determining the choice of a freight option is speed. Air freight is much faster when it comes to speed. Many sea shipments take more than a month to arrive their destinations while air shipments take a day or two. If materials or products are urgent air shipment is preferred. Reliability is the third factor, and it should be known that one of the factors which contribute to customers satisfaction is how reliable is the business with delivery. Using sea freight means that some satisfaction have to be sacrificed. Businesses cannot rely on ships as they run on weekly schedules and the risks of shipments getting delayed are very high. The customer’s satisfaction will drop if they have to suffer a delayed delivery.

Lastly companies consider capacity before choosing their freight model. Air freight carries small volumes of cargo while sea freight carries heavy volumes of cargo. Ships carry any kind of equipment, heavy machinery and other large cargo because they store a lot of them at once .This means that their competitive rates are high and they service large demands.
