The Industrial Revolution and its Impact on the Structure of the Workplace in the United States

The Industrial Revolution refers to a historical era that was marked by a transition from the handicraft agrarian economy to a machine-manufacturing industrial economy ( Rees, 2015 ). The revolution not only changed the working structure, but also how goods were produced. The traditional methods of operation such as the home-based cottage industries evolved once mechanization and automation was introduced. The introduction of machines and factories made work easier and increased the production levels in the agricultural and textile industries.

Effect of the Shift in Economic Systems (from a largely agrarian society to an industrial society) on Workers and their Families

The industrial society led to an increase in employment opportunities for many Americans ( Korgen, Korgen & Giraffe, 2015 ). The shift from an agrarian society led to an expansion of manufacturing and processing industries in the nation. Consequently, the introduction of industrialization led to the development and expansion of many cities. This evolution led to the improvement of living standards for the workers in the factories. Their families also benefited from the advancements due to improvements in education, health and nutrition.

How Technology has changed the Workplace over the Past 50 Years

Technology has reshaped and revolutionized the workplace following a series of advancements and innovations over the past decades. It has led to an improvement of efficiency and increased productivity of employees. The introduction of the internet has greatly revolutionized communication at the workplace ( Korgen, Korgen & Giraffe, 2015 ). In the contemporary world, technology has made it possible for individuals to work from anywhere through virtual offices and online cyberspaces. It has led to a reduction of management costs by cutting down on office expense through elimination of the traditional system of manual paperwork.

Career Options Now and Then

In the past, career options for my parents were limited and as such, they only had a few jobs to choose from. In addition to this, technological advancements were low implying that the opportunities for individuals to pursue different professions were low. This has, however, changed in the current world. I believe that I can decide to pursue the career of my choice because there are no limitations. The modernized world enables every individual to make a choice depending on their preference and capability.
