What caused the disappearance of the magnetosphere of Mars?
There are several theories that try to explain the disappearance of Martian magnetosphere. According to Lafrance. A. (2015), one of the arguments is that Mars was once bombarded by a massive Asteroid, more significant than the one that caused the disappearance of dinosaurs on Earth causing the Planet to lose its magnetism.
Another theory speculates that Mars could have had magnetic fields in one hemisphere causing the magnetism to weaken over time. From the significant theories, determination of the Mars’ internal structure and contents is key to the resolution of the disappearance of the magnetic field. Samples collected from the surface indicate the presence of iron metal which provides evidence of magnetic properties of Mars.

Where did Mars’ atmosphere go to?
Mars and Earth both lie within the goldilocks region and it is expected that the two planets had similar atmospheres. However, Mars has been known to have very thin atmosphere compared to Earth. According to Fecht Sarah (2017), around 66% of Mars’ atmosphere has escaped into space over the past four billion years ago. The disappearance is attributed to exposure to solar winds that have left the planet bare, dry and barren.

Planets Earth and Mars are both within the Goldilocks zone. That makes both of them capable of supporting life by their proximity to the sun. The temperature within this region enables water to exist in liquid form on their surfaces. However, water can vaporize literally at any temperature depending on the pressure. The right pressure is provided by the presence of the atmosphere surrounding the surface of the earth. Very low pressures will make the great water mass on earth to evaporate at very low temperatures and vice versa. The atmosphere is therefore critical in maintaining pressure suitable for water to be in liquid form at the temperatures within the Goldilocks zone. The atmosphere is shielded by a magnetic field known as the magnetosphere. As the sun continually hurls a wide range of magnetic spectra around it, the magnetosphere buffers the atmosphere from being swept away by these harmful radiations.
