On July 23 rd, 2019, a group of teenagers were arrested on charges of shoplifting at Macy’s. In total, the arrested teenagers were 5: two 16-year-olds and three 15-year-olds. An investigation was carried out, and the discovery was that the minors had stolen property worth $571.98 from Macy’s (Woyton, 2019). Whereas three of the teenagers faced detention at Yorktown police, the other two were at Macy’s loss prevention location. Normally, the underlying charge for shoplifting property is petit larceny. However, the officers decided to charge the minors under juvenile delinquency. On August 13, they were ordered to appear at the Westchester County Department of Probation, and their case is still ongoing.

Since the juvenile court has yet to decide on the case, there are several ways in which the case could go. The worst-case scenario is that the case youths could face up to 2 years in detention because it is considered a third-degree crime, with the value of the items being over $500 (Rosenblum, 2018) . The elements of a crime, in this case, are satisfied. First, shoplifting is a criminal law offense. Next, this was an act rather than an omission. The teenagers deliberately took the property with no intention of paying. The circumstances, however, are less clear, as no details on the motives of the theft have been made public. The result was a loss of property worth $571.98 by Macy’s. Since they are minors, the juvenile delinquency court should offer restitution to Macy’s. Next, the five teenagers should be put under probation while they undergo counseling since they are teenagers whose age means that their decision is, at times, not as objective as that of an adult.
