Which anatomical system(s) is/are most important for a radiographer to know extremely well? Are some systems less important to know? Which ones would you stress to a student radiographer?

Radiographers develop radiographic images and procedures for use by clinicians to view human internal anatomy. The human body is comprised of twelve anatomic systems including nervous, skeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory and reproductive systems among others (Nordqvist, 2017). Essentially, all anatomical systems are, and hence a radiographer should be knowledgeable about them to provide reliable reports. The inadequacy of knowledge of all systems would lead to misdiagnosis or failure to diagnose which is unprofessional and may lead to patients suffering. Competency is a fundamental requirement in healthcare related professions, and diverse high-level knowledge is the fundaments of health care (Farajollahi et al., 2014). Therefore, a radiographer must be well equipped with sufficient knowledge of all anatomical systems to be fully competent and to be trusted to deliver quality reports. Basic knowledge in any system is not enough to meet the levels of competency required in dealing with the human body. Any system can develop conditions that damage human life and cause suffering and ultimately death.

Are some systems less important to know?

All in all, the cardiovascular system, nervous system, and respiratory system are subtle systems which put human life at higher risk and malpractice regarding the systems may rapidly amount to death. The systems are not more important but rather more delicate and require precise knowledge and care while developing images, procedures and reports for related signs. No system is less critical but cardiovascular, nervous and respiratory require extra precision.

Which ones would you stress to a student radiographer?

The most critical system is the cardiovascular system which includes the heart which is the engine of human life. The nervous system is also to be stressed since it encompasses the spinal cord which supports the whole body and brain which is the center of all human responses. Malpractice due to lack of sufficient knowledge in cardiovascular system and nervous system would amount to critical and irreversible health conditions such as death or paralysis.
