The competitive and sporting culture of the Greeks put them on the map. Participants in the athletics strived to overtake each other’s physical endeavors. They performances excluded any sense of team spirit and setting records.

It was important mainly because it helped choose only the best individuals to be soldiers.Also, it enabled them to become more united.
What are some of the advantages of being very competitive?
Individual competition enabled the athletes to become faster, stronger, and better than anybody else. The best athletes were highly honored throughout their families, community, and entire Greece.
Greece was very small compared to all her neighbors (like Persia and Egypt) so why was being competitive a big advantage for Greece?
It enabled them to not only produce the best soldiers but also excel in war. It also brought all the Greeks together and bred intense loyalty and pride.
The Ancient Olympics vs The Modern Olympics
The ancient Olympics were often used as common grounds for bringing opposing groups together. Also, the ancient Olympics focused on individual competitiveness of the participants. On the other hand, the modern Olympics is often focused on teamwork. Also, the competitive nature has hugely shifted from choosing soldiers to winning medals.

Competing naked seemed to communicate a sense of physical virtue, status, ethnicity, maleness, freedom, and privilege. Today, athletes compete semi-nude and still portray a sense of discipline, strength, and beauty.

Today, the world has become much more conservative mainly due to established rules and regulations. By showing athletes competing nude on television is considered illegal especially if the show is watched by children.

The participation of many nations in either Olympics or World cups has helped build peace, erase racial profiling, and enhance unity throughout the world.
Are the Olympics today more about ‘the athletes’ or the ‘nations’?
They are a bit mix of both. Athletes compete to not only to win as individuals but also as nations. In modern Olympics, nations are ranked in a table according the number of medals they have won.
Women in the Olympic Games
Originally, women did not compete in the Olympics until 1900 during the Paris games. They were only allowed to compete in golf and lawn tennis. Women officially competed in gymnastics and athletes in 1928.

In the ancient Greek, women were not allowed to participate in the Olympics. Married women were not allowed to go to the stadium especially because the men competed naked.
