Anti-Japanese sentiments have their origin in the past, even before World War II. Racial bigotry and prejudice began promptly after workers from China started arriving in the country during the mid-19th century. This set pace for the resistance most Asian-Americans would face in the next decades that followed. During the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt, an executive order for the reason of national security rendered the removal of persons deemed a threat to the United States of America. In this directive, close to 120,000 Japanese and American citizens were rounded up and moved to “relocation centers,” which were in essence internment camps. While the Supreme Court challenged the order, many scholars thought that it presented an episode that was shameful and mired with racial anxiety and irrational fear. This government action changed Japanese and other Asian America migration to America.

Presently, yet another policy proposed by the Trump administration is threatening relations between ethnic minorities in the country. Much like the shadows of the past Trump’s executive order that has barred visa holders, legal residents and refugees from Middle Eastern and African countries continue to resonate and echo racial anxiety. In a speech, the president made a startling promise when he vowed to shut down immigration of Muslims in the country. Considering the immensity of his declarations, 1.7 billion Muslims, which roughly translates to 20 percent of the global population, faced terrorism accusations. Moreover, he refuted any challenges to the policy by remarking that those who questioned his statements lacked the propensity to lead America. Such hardline policies result in dire consequences as they are extremely counter progressive. One long-term repercussion is the reduction in economic output. As a product of irrational fear and racial bigotry, Trump’s order will foster a society filled with racial pronouncements, which will in turn result to the perversion of American humanitarian generosity.
