It is the mandate of every Advanced Registered Nurse (ARN) to develop and have a personal develop plan (PDP). The PDP is a design tool that is used to set precise goals of one’s career. The tool is composed of several tasks that are required to be completed so as to identify the best path towards the completion of a goal. The first step involves identifying the purpose of the PDP. The next step involves identified the licensure and governing requirements for a particular state, for this case Florida. The next section involves a personal assessment that is used to provide an overview of one’s strengths, weaknesses, goals, and their objectives. The final step is the development of the Curriculum Vitae (CV). This paper aims to analyze the purpose of the PDP, consider the APN scope of practice in Florida, undertake a personal assessment through Benner’s self-assessment tool, analyze the strategies for networking and marketing, and develop a CV that is attached. 

Goals and Purpose of the APN Professional Development Plan 

One of the goals of the APN professional development plan is to successfully apply the knowledge and skills that the individual has attained to realize professional and individual growth. The plan functions as a strategy that facilitates the promotion of excellence in APN practice. The plan ensures that one puts down their career position, goals, and objectives and can serve to further one’s career progress and growth. For one to ensure that their nursing practice remains relevant, there is a need to advance one’s knowledge and skills. The PDP ensures that one analyzes their knowledge and skills and identifies ways that one can develop their skills for their growth and development. The plan ensures that one fully understands the licensure and governing requirements in their state to ensure that they will always comply to these requirements. The personal assessment tool can also be used to explore one’s passions, discover their interests, and to analyze whether a specific area of practice can suit one best.

APN Scope Practice in Florida 

The requirements and guidelines pertaining the licensure, accreditation, certification, and education (LACE) are to be set by the state and the APN must abide by the practices the requirements so as to practice in a specific state. The requirements for the APN were set by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) in 2008 to ensure the uniformity in APN regulations (“APRN Consensus Model”, 2020). While the document was adopted, the individual state has the priority regarding the autonomy that nurses are granted. For the state of Florida, the Nursing Practitioner (NP) is expected to meet certain requirements that include having a valid Registered Nurse license, a certificate in a nursing specialty area showing post master’s program or have a master’s degree, complete 500 clinical hours in their nursing practice, and to have a certification of national advanced practice that is from a specialty board which is accepted (“FLBON - Advanced Practice Registered Nurse”, 2019). The nursing practitioner is expected to abide by the regulations in order to practice nursing professionally and legally in the state of Florida. 

There are strict regulations to practicing nursing in Florida as the state is a restricted practice state. The regulations in the state indicate that the APN will only perform limited medical acts such as treatment, diagnosis, and operation of a patient in the presence of a medical doctor, a dentist, or an osteopathic physician all of which should be licensed by the state. The NP in Florida is also restricted from signing the Baker Act, certifying DNR orders, or a death certificate. They are also not recognized by Medicare and Medicaid as primary care providers. NPs are allowed to prescribe schedule I, II, and III control substances after a bill was passed in 2016 (“Important Legislative Update regarding HB 423”, 2019). This shows that while there are strict regulations passed by the Florida Board of Nursing (FLBON), there are continual changes to the law that nurses should be aware of. 

Personal Assessment Through Benner’s Self-Assessment Tool 

The Benner’s self-assessment tool is a five step process that can be used by the APN to analyze their skills and abilities. The tool starts with the novice who does not have experience in situations that they are to perform and that they are unable to use discretionary judgment. The next step is an advanced beginner who shows acceptable performance after having prior experiences in real situations and their knowledge at this stage is developing. The next step is the competent nurse that has been working for approximately 3 years and can demonstrate efficiency and has a plan that establishes the perspective of their work. The next step is the proficient nurse that perceives situations as a whole, understands the long-term goals, and their decision-making is less labored because it is based on experience. The next step is the expert nurse that has an intuitive grasp of every situation and does not undertake wasteful consideration. Their performance is flexible, fluid, and shows high proficiency (Benner, 2001). The personal assessment based on Benner’s self-assessment tool was used to highlight the key strengths, weaknesses, objectives, and goals that target improvement. 

The analysis showed that one of my key strengths is with my communication skills where I am a good listener and patient when dealing with people. I have worked in the medial field for approximately 18 years and this has enabled me to amass a great deal of experience in nursing. Throughout the years, I have learned that effective communication and listening are critical for success in the healthcare industry as it ensures that one can make an accurate diagnosis and assessment of the patient, and delivering the right kind of treatment. As nurses interact with patients, good listening will ensure that the patient feels that their concerns are being heard. This ensures that the patient becomes satisfied with the entire procedure and is likely to comply with the treatment approach (Azevedo, Araújo, Pessoa Júnior, Silva, Santos, & Bastos, 2017). I thus find that the strength of communication and listening has been key in enabling me to navigate throughout my nursing over the years successfully. 

One of the weaknesses that I currently face is with ensuring that I operate at expert levels and that I constantly have and apply the knowledge that I have learned. The expert APN can pin point specific diagnosis and can do this without any wasteful consideration (Benner, 2001). I have not achieved such a level of expertise and proficiency. One of the reasons is with the continual application of knowledge that has been gained to assist in nursing practice. However, it is expected that over some time I will be able to advance my knowledge and experience and I will be able to operate at the expert level. 

The goals I have are related to the further development of my career. I would like to focus more on developing good relationships with the patients and staff I work with. I would also like to learn how to deliver better pediatric services. Additionally, I would like to gain knowledge in APN skills and knowledge. I would like to expand my knowledge and skills when dealing with pediatric patients as this would result in an improvement in the overall delivery of care. In the long run, I would like to be a primary provider that has a full understanding on problems of patients and how patients are affected by every decision that I make. 

Moving to a new role can be a difficult endeavor and I hope to use a few strategies to ensure that I adapt well. First, I will familiarize myself with the new role and gain all the knowledge that will be required to undertake the new role adequately. The second thing would be to collaborate with other individuals that understand the role adequately. Such a collaboration should enable them to answer any questions and to provide assistance in case I encounter any difficulties with the new role. The third approach to manage my stress adequately involves managing time well. Time management will involve an analysis and understanding of all daily duties and expectations with the new role. There will be objectives for the specific months in the new role. In the first month, the objective will be to familiarize oneself with the new roles. The objective of the second month involves understanding and abiding by daily duties and collaborating effectively with other individuals. In the third month, there will be an expectation to be operating at a proficient level in the handling of various roles. 

Networking and Marketing Strategies 

Various network and marketing strategies can be applied by a nursing practitioner to improve their services. One of the networking strategies one can have is to join the nursing organization. There are several nursing organizations in Florida which include the Florida Nurse Practitioner Network (FNPN) and the Florida Association of Nurse Practitioners (FLANP). These organizations have several pieces of information that can be use by nursing practitioners to identify employment opportunities, new information, information regarding new bills, passed bills, and other rules and regulations. By putting a close attention to these organizations and their websites for opportunities, and job postings, one can be sure to have a list of job openings from time to time. 

The marketing strategy that will be adopted will involve the use of the internet. One can establish a website where they advertise themselves. Additionally, professional social media networks such as LinkedIn provide a platform where one can post information about their employment status. One can choose to advance their marketing strategy through the use of a video resume to assist one to stand out. There are also online platforms that provide information regarding job postings. With the advent of the internet, the posting of jobs has become different and therefore one needs to take a more aggressive approach. By actively seeking opportunities in different organizations, one can specifically identify areas of promotions and advance their career path. 

Conclusion 

The APN Professional development plan enabled analysis of licensing and regulations in Florida, analysis of the personal assessment, and identification of networking and marketing strategies. It was identified that there was specific licensure, accreditation, certification, and education for practicing nursing in Florida. The nursing practitioner was required to have a master’s or postgraduate degree and be registered as a nursing practitioner. The personal assessment was used to provide analysis on personal strengths, weaknesses, goals, and objectives. The key strength that was identified was that of communication and listening skills and the weakness that was identified was the inadequate knowledge to perform at expert levels. It was also identified that there were networking and marketing strategies that were available through nursing organizations.
