Across the United States, cases of social injustice and health inequality are visibly present in healthcare institutions. These cases are also present in maternal health and childbirth with the United States among the leaders in maternal and infant mortality rates. The issue is especially witnessed among women and infants from racial minority groups. As a practicing nurse I have witnessed such instances that were due to social injustices and health inequalities. When working in an institution, a nurse has to make do with the available facilities to offer the best care for patients. However in the case I was part of, provision of quality care was hindered by inadequate facilities. As a team, we lost a young mother and her newborn baby due to obstetrical trauma.
It was a high risk case which would have been manageable in a well equipped facility. However, the institution served a majority of black women and was not well equipped resulting in maternal and infant death. However the collaborative effort towards solving such issues is among the government, health facilities and insurance providers who in this case have failed the population served by this facility. The case adds to the many numbers of black women and infants who are dying due to ill-equipped hospitals that often serves a majority of the community. Current statistics indicate that more African American women die due to childbirth and childbirth complications than whites or any other minority group. It shows that the collaborative initiative put in place may not be as effective. The system is failing those it is supposed to protecting necessitating a complete overhaul of the healthcare system especially the obstetrics departments. I recommend that the government and all stakeholders involved adjust such hospitals to levels similar to those that serve white mothers as they seem to receive better services as indicated by the low maternal mortality rates.
