The Baldrige Framework outlines the critical aspects of organizational management, which leaders ought to consider and implement for organizational excellence (Lide, 2018). This paper discusses four categories within the framework concerning their application in the management of an emergency department. The discussion identifies two activities that a manager should do under each category to advance organizational excellence.

Strategy

This category focuses on the development of action plans and strategic objectives, their implementation, and applying necessary changes ("Baldrige Criteria Commentary," 2019) In an emergency department setting, the key activities of a manager include:

Implementation of strategies to ensure that the objectives and goals of the organization are achieved.

Customers

This category deals with the engagement of customers to ensure continued success ("Baldrige Criteria Commentary," 2019). Therefore, management in an emergency department should carry out the following activities.

Ensure that the staff listen to patients and address their concerns accordingly.

The manager should also set up forums and avenues that engage patients in the improvement of service delivery.

Workforce

This category is concerned with the practices within the working environment that are aimed at the creation and maintenance of high standards of performance ("Baldrige Criteria Commentary," 2019). An emergency department manager ought to do the following to achieve this:

Ensuring the safety and conduciveness of the working environment for nurses and doctors. In this regard, the manager should ensure that all personnel is provided with adequate resources and support services for maximum productivity and commitment.

The manager should also facilitate the engagement of medical personnel through various forums to ensure their satisfaction and subsequent productivity.

Operations

This category is focused on the effectiveness of the operational aspects of the organization, including innovation, product delivery, and design, and general organizational tasks ("Baldrige Criteria Commentary," 2019). In the case of an emergency department, a manager can ensure excellence in this area by:

Introducing innovative approaches and models for handling emergency cases and patients with special needs. This would improve the satisfaction of patients and boosting the reputation of the hospital for future success.

Application of a lean process management strategy to reduce the operational costs of the emergency department. This would increase the profit-making capacity of the organization while ensuring the integrity and quality of services.
