Hume says that inductive beliefs about the future are based on custom or habit, not on reasoning. Humes differentiated two types of those which are impressive and ideas. He explains that impression tends to from basic ideas. In those cases, impression refers to the issues that people want to hear or relate to their beliefs. I such aspects tend to form the ideas that people will create the future. One example that Humes gives relates to the issue of writing fictional stories. He explains that any writer cannot write a story about things that people have never heard about or have no idea about their existence. For example, many of the fictional stories relate to the existence of aliens. It is the beliefs of many people that aliens exist even though it is not scientifically proven. In that case, the author is trying to use impression to formulate his or her ideas.
When Humes was asked about the nature of our reasoning, he explained that ‘ it is based on the experience of other people.' It shows that people could not be able o reason on issues that they have no idea about their existence. For example, the way people portray the issue of giants is that they are big creatures which have features resembling those of human beings. It is certain that not person has even seen giants. In fact, the only giants that people know are the tall human beings who have certain extraordinary features (Hume, 2015). In most cases, these are the impression that Humes is trying to explain. In relating to that, he points to the fact that the future of people is based on the impression which forms the basic of ideas. Some people try to imagine the type of future that they will have a base on the impression of another people. However, they are shaped by ideas over time. The person might want to change his or her future based on the ideas that he has obtained over the course of the years.
