Since moving into the facility, Daniella’s needs have changed. Initially, she needed help with her activities of daily living (ADLs) and also needed someone who would make sure she had taken her medication whenever necessary. She was also somewhat forgetful. Although the facility was right for her, Daniella’s health started to deteriorate and she begins to have more difficulties especially when accomplishing ADLs like dressing herself and bathing. The assisted living facility enabled her to thrives and avoid isolation as much as possible.

At the assisted living Daniella got a lovely efficient apartment, and all her changing needs were met. She was provided with supervision, laundry services, housekeeping and she had her meals in a communal dining room. As her health deteriorated, the assisted living facility provided her with additional services without making her leave the apartment. She was also neither isolated nor without assistance because the facility provided social interaction with others and a variety of activities that kept her sharp. Her children and grandchildren frequently visited whenever she wanted.

If the assisted living facility was not there, Daniella would have to move to Florida with her daughter Sophia. Sophia’s husband Antonio had reached the retirement age and they wanted to move to Florida, but Daniella did not want to move far away from the community she had lived her entire life. Another alternative for Daniella would be to stay with her other children who lived in the area. However, these options had a challenge because they neither had the room nor resources to include her in their homes.

Nursing facilities play an important role as for the case of Daniella in the care and comfort of older adults. With these facilities, they can balance their own needs and interact with others in their chosen lifestyle (Zimmerman et al., 2014). Moving into an elderly home provides them with an opportunity to optimize their lives without any hassles and also build friendships. While many older adults struggle to adopt the change, others enjoy the extra advantages of the place (Carroll, 2015). There are approximately 50,000 assisted living homes in the U.S. which serve over one million individuals. The facilities provide extra supervision for elderly men and women and also gives them secure care (Goldberg, 2014). As such, it is recommended for older adults to stay in the assisted facilities because it provides them with extra care support and freedom.
