The Final Exit Network's standards and practices are lower and more controversial than those of the Oregon Death with Dignity Act (DWDA). For instance, the former would not corroborate the medical information presented to them by a client with a health expert, leaving their platform open for potential abuse or unwarranted deaths. Worse still, they would approve deaths for the clients even when they had not met them or gathered medical records (CNN, 2014). On the other hand, Oregon's DWDA involves licensed physicians to assess their potential clients' cases and confirm their prognosis and conditions ( Oregon Health Authority ). In addition, the Final Exit Network does not propose alternative methods for their potential clients to cope with their ailments or complications. The Final Exit Network's deviations in practice caused several legal and ethical issues. For instance, assisted suicide was and remains illegal in Arizona, but the organization still facilitated the services for Jana. Moreover, it was unethical that the network would ignore other medical experts' assessments, such as psychiatric evaluations, which would disqualify some patients.
Organizations like the Final Exit Network should not have a place in the legal euthanasia practice. The primary reason for this is their low ethical standards and unsatisfactory legal compliance, which has caused many unwarranted deaths and leaves the platform open for abuse. Additionally, their lack of a satisfactory protocol involving qualified health experts and lack of counseling for alternative methods other than death makes them unethical. Legal and ethical euthanasia programs seek to assist their clients to take alternative methods, such as pain management therapies, to help them avoid the finality of death in unwarranted cases. Moreover, the Final Exit Network should have no place in legal euthanasia practice because there were no requirements that their exit guides had to be medical experts, therefore making it illegal and unethical.
