Just like other sectors of the economy, it is imperative for air transport to be regulated. The rules and regulations are aimed out outlining what the stakeholders in the air industry can or cannot. Through that, the air industry remains functions through guarantying safety and peace while solving the emerging crisis amicably. Through that, equity is sustained, people and infrastructure are protected, and there is a promotion of credible values that guarantee the provision of goods and services. Although there many professional aviation organizations, this essay evaluates the role of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in the regulation of the air industry. 

ICAO plays a credible role in air transport regulation through the establishment of policies that are to be followed by its members (ICAO, 2019). ICAO was formed and ratified in 1944 and 1947 respectively after the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation by 52 countries. It is a specialized agency and a professional body in the aviation industry affiliated to the United Nations. The primary role of the ICAO is to establish and implement standards in the aviation industry across the globe. ICAO classifies the technical standards and principles within the international air transport industry. It also plans and implements the policies that are essential in ensuring security and safety within the industry. ICAO also controls the U.S. Government’s International Group on International Aviation (IGIA). Presently, ICAO has 191 members and is responsible for providing Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPS) to its members. Irrespective of the variation on the air transport regulation in different countries, ICAO ensures that the air transport industry is harmonized to a certain level (Weber, 2017).

In conclusion, ICAO is responsible for setting standards and policies in the air industry. It has 191 members and was founded in 1944. ICAO ensures that air transport standards are harmonized among its members. Therefore, in the future, ICAO will continue to improve its policies and standards to enhance security and safety among the stakeholders in the air transport.
