There are a lot of activities undertaken in an airport that have impact on its immediate environment. Design and Construction of buildings involves heavy machinery like trucks and cranes, which have gas emissions. Construction is also accompanied by noise pollution while not forgetting air pollution by sand and cement. Packaging bags and plastics are also an eyesore to the surroundings. Airports management also contract janitorial services. These services can affect the environment because certain cleaning utilities and procedures may cause harm to human beings. Tenants who have been leased space in the airport buildings such as food retail chains and restaurants should have proper waste disposal facilities to protect the environment.
This proposal aims to discuss on the measures taken by airport management to ensure environmental sustainable procurement. The objective is to find out whether guidelines and certain standards have been enforced as a requirement to anyone contracted in the airports be it in construction, leasing or janitorial services. The study will also try to determine whether the current measures put in place are sufficient or whether there is need to propose more guidelines to further entrench environmental sustainable procurement.

The data to be collected for this study will come from three main sources: airport design guidelines, interviews and literature. The design guidelines can be obtained from airport operators such as the Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA). The interviews will target three groups of people. Passengers using the airport will be given questionnaires aimed to gather relevant data. Some of the questions asked include: Do you think the airport has done enough to minimize noise pollution? What is your view on the waste disposal methods in the airport? Workers in the airport will also be interviewed such as security personnel, cleaners and even flight personnel. Airport managers will also be queried on what policy steps they have undertaken to ensure greener airports.
There is also more data in literature about environmental conservation in airports. It can be obtained especially from magazines, journals and even websites. This method will shed light on what other airports around the globe are doing in their procurements to go green. Key innovations such as use of electronic vehicles to ferry vehicles and also tow airplanes will be assessed for their success or otherwise. The study will also strive to find whether there are novel ideas implemented in other countries that could be successfully applied locally.
In my view, this study is strongly related to the impact of environmental conservation on business contracts especially in terms of procurement. Will the effort invested in environmental protection result in returns? If the answer is in the affirmative, it will be an incentive towards conservation.
