Professionalism is an important quality required for any career stream. As an effective investigator, a person needs extremely professional skills to provide quality services to clients. Thus to become an effective investigator, a person has to pass through specific processes. First, a person can become an effective investigator by undergoing formal investigation training. Formal training equips detectives with skills and ideas to approach situations with the most suitable methods to solve the problem ( Appanah & Pillay, 2020) . During formal training to become an effective investigator, students learn the necessary codes of conduct and principles to execute their roles with professionalism. Degree and career training are mandatory qualifications for students who want to become investigators.

Gaining professional experience is another way of obtaining the skills needed to become an effective investigator. In the United States, most states require detectives to meet professional experience requirements ( Koranteng et al., 2020) . Acquiring professional experience is essential in practice because it gives investigators the upper hands of discharging their roles. Some of the ways of gaining professional experience include becoming a member of an investigative service unit and acquiring an expert practice certificate from a legal authority.

Completing firearm training and licensing is another way of acquiring the skills needed to become an effective investigator. Private investigators may either apply for an armed or unarmed investigation permit. When working as an investigator, a detective is not allowed to possess or carry a gun unless they have a firearm work permit. Firearm permits are given to detectives who have professional training on using guns ( Piopiunik et al., 2020) . Therefore completing firearm training and licensing is vital because it enables investigators to perform their operations with courage and professionalism.

Lastly, benchmarking is another way of obtaining the necessary skills needed to become an effective investigator. Through benchmarking activities, detectives learn how experts in the field discharge their roles to meet professional requirements. Thus, it is prudent for detectives to benchmark to learn how to carry various functions as an effective investigator.
