HIT Benefits

HIT has had several positive impacts on healthcare settings. Among them is reduced medical errors. Medical errors usually arise in several cases—for instance, the wrong prescription. A wrong prescription is dangerous as it can worsen a patient's health status by using a drug that was not intended for him/her. With HIT in place, pharmacists can countercheck a patient's condition through information accessed from the internet, thus, ensuring the correct prescription of drugs. Also, they can keep in touch with doctors through workplace inter-telecommunication, whereby they can consult with doctors when they are not sure if a prescribed drug suits a patient. This is achieved by the fact that patient data are recorded electronically by the use of EHR systems.

Secondly, HIT has enhanced telemedicine services. This a situation whereby a doctor can monitor a patient's progress from their remote areas. This has been a significant boost for cardiovascular patients who require frequent attention. As a result, doctors can keep track of their patients, and thus, in case a patient's conditions worsen, they will be notified via a set notification on their mobile phones. Hence, they will act promptly to ensure immediate response to respective patients, thus, improving healthcare quality.

HIT Risk Factor

Among the risks is the retrieval of the wrong patient's records from EHR systems. This usually results in medication orders for incorrect patients. This is a problem that arises due to the human-computer interface error. As a result, it can be mitigated by ensuring that service providers record accurate patient information and also, persons retrieving patient's data from hospital databases countercheck their information; thus, ensuring correct data is extracted. This will prevent medical errors that usually arise as a result of wrong prescriptions.
