“Bohemian Rhapsody” is a movie that has over the past few months received a lot of recognition worldwide for its rather emotional appeal. The overall theme of the movie is unity of purpose and how important it is especially when navigating through life. Disunity is portrayed as something that not only brings loneliness and suffering but also leads to poor decision making and some times even death.

The movie is basically a biopic for a band called Queen that was a sensation in the 70s up until the 90s. The band was formed in 1970 with Fredrick Mercury, the main protagonist, being the lead singer of the band. Fredrick Mercury otherwise known as Freddie lives a life that is controversial while gaining popularity within and without the UK. The movie also shows the chemistry within the band was so good and the team work between the individual queen band players kept rewarding them with bangers that sent shockwaves to the world. All the band members, except from Fredrick Mercury, started families with their girlfriends and had an element of stability with uniting factor, family. However, Fredrick Mercury, who was unsure about his sexual orientation at the time, plunged deep into drugs and partying all the while having many different lovers not mention making bad decisions. He for instance, fired Norman Sheffield without consulting other band members. After living a promiscuous life, he got AIDS. At that time, Antiretrovirals were not present which means this was a death sentence. On realizing this, he reunited with his band members to once again make music and lived for 6 years before he succumbed.

Several theories can be used to explain social issues in the video. First, sexual orientation especially for men, was one of the biggest misunderstandings at that time. The society believed that men did not have the capability to become bisexual. If men were involved in sexual relations with other men, they were ultimately considered gay. Mary Austin, a woman who Mercury considered the love of his life, left him after it become clear that he was involved with other men. She claimed that he was gay and therefore no longer interested in her. Moreover, the society then developed a stigma for those who had AIDs under the assumption that any relations with them would lead to them being infected with the killer disease. This notion is what made Mercury not to come out to his fans until he was at state that he could no longer hide it. The video contributes a lot in terms of theory, and depicts an institutionalized capital that is cultural characteristics that is consciously acquired and inherited especially when it comes to sexual orientation and stigma in general.
