Several theories can be used to explain social issues in the video. First, sexual orientation especially for men, was one of the biggest misunderstandings at that time. The society believed that men did not have the capability to become bisexual. If men were involved in sexual relations with other men, they were ultimately considered gay. Mary Austin, a woman who Mercury considered the love of his life, left him after it become clear that he was involved with other men. She claimed that he was gay and therefore no longer interested in her. Moreover, the society then developed a stigma for those who had AIDs under the assumption that any relations with them would lead to them being infected with the killer disease. This notion is what made Mercury not to come out to his fans until he was at state that he could no longer hide it. The video contributes a lot in terms of theory, and depicts an institutionalized capital that is cultural characteristics that is consciously acquired and inherited especially when it comes to sexual orientation and stigma in general.
