Mitchell (2017) asserted that boot camp provides a structured and suitable environment that enhances discipline and is coupled with intense physical activities under a military kind of surrounding. The program is designed for both children and adults with the aim of strengthening good behavior. Some of the individuals most likely to be enrolled in a boot camp program include those with criminal backgrounds, those who lack a mentor in their life, and those who are in an unstable supportive relationship. However, critical questions remain as to whether boot camp can improve the attitude of the offender, make them more employable, or even reduce recidivism.

One of the advantages of the boot camp program is that participants learn vital skills that they can apply to become successful individuals in their life. They also acquire healthy mannerism such as good eating habits and exercise which can improve their overall lifestyle. The social activities in the boot camp, individuals with difficulties in forming relationships, can benefit. The discipline acquired through the thorough military-style leadership improves on discipline and increases the likelihood of a former offender getting employed. The attitudes of the participants can also change to the better through proper adaption. The people experiencing mental issues will most likely feel relieved due to the holistic rehabilitation provided in the boot camp.

However, many people hold reservations about the program especially with its effectiveness with regards to reducing recidivism. The core function of every rehabilitation program should be its ability to inculcate values and discipline to an individual to ensure that they do not re-offend. Sheehan and Reed (2017) noted that research conducted between offenders who participated and those who did not participate in the program revealed that the military-style program does not have any effect on reducing recidivism. The program is less suitable for children because it denies them the chance of being at home for an extended period. Lastly, because the program is based on quick fixes, it might not result in the desired outcome.
