Nursing is one of the professions that require constant knowledge advancement to achieve its desired objectives. The development of new concepts is increasingly necessary to ensure that nurses remain at per with the new challenges that emerge. It is, therefore, imperative for nurses to borrow knowledge from other disciplines for nurses not provide holistic care. Although opponents have claimed that it is unethical behavior, borrowing theories give the nurses the much-needed ground to base their arguments on several situations.

Critics have intimated that borrowing theories in nurses should be refuted because it makes nursing dependable on other theories. However, nursing is a dynamic profession that requires constant growth and development, and as a result, it must incorporate information from other disciplines. It further assists nurses to develop arguments on a wide variety of medical situations that might not be covered by the discipline-specific theory.

Many scholars have intimated that the borrowed theory should be viewed as a supportive tenet aimed at informing and guiding the nursing practice. It is also important to note that no single nursing theory provided professionals with all the possible concepts required in handling patients. For instance, Nightingale’s “Notes” did a tremendous job in explaining the four metaparadigm concepts needed in nursing (Smith & Parker, 2015). Although it explained the environmental rules guiding nursing practice, it failed to address all the possible phenomena managed by nurses.

The borrowing of theories from other disciplines is critically essential in informing and influencing the nursing practice. The additional information adds to the internal framework of nursing in significant areas such as concepts, definitions, and concepts. Some of the theories from other disciplines that have significantly influenced nursing include social cognitive theory, general systems theory, and stress and coping theory amongst others. Masters, (2014) pointed out that many authors have also fronted an argument that no knowledge should be innately associated with a specific discipline in nursing.

Borrowing theories also enhance collaboration with other disciplines in the health profession. Inter-professional association improves communication and enhances comprehensive nursing care. Most fundamentally, it promotes team mentality thus enabling a patient-centered type of care (Courtney et al. 2015).

In conclusion, it is critically important to note that nursing cannot conclusively rely on its theories to handle their professional obligations. It continually requires refreshment from other disciplines to ensure that it remains cognizant of the new challenges. However, critical assessment of these theories should remain a significant concern to avoid incorporation of inappropriate information.
