This paper outlines the theoretical knowledge needed to care for Kim, the definition of Asthma, the effects of prednisone, and the side effects. Information on Singulair and albuterol. How much medication is prescribed and the route the medications are given. Reliable sources to find information on Asthma is the text and online information from a credible source. Medication information can be found in the pharmacology texts, drug books, and the Physicians Desk Reference (PDR), which is commercially compiled by the pharmaceutical companies. The PDR list manufactures prescribing information and standard resources for professional prescribing and administering medication (Treas, Wilkinson, Barnett, & Smith, 2018).

A rationale to give Yen to explain the safety of prednisone prescription according to the PDR prednisone is a commonly prescribed oral corticosteroid, which is used in many conditions in adults and pediatric patients with Asthma (PDR search, n.d). Prednisone may cause weak bones and affect growth; however, these effects are only seen with prolonged use. Kim has only a prescribed 5-day tapering course of prednisone, which is short term and will help eliminate his shortness of breath (Treas et al., 2018).

In response to Yen’s concern about why Kim received both a shot and pills, since Kim was experiencing shortness of breath, administering an injection of the medicine would rapidly help to achieve relief of shortness of breath. Per the text, some of the advantages of receiving injections are the rapid absorption, and since Kim had shortness of breath, a one-time injection would help him. In this case, oral medications are convenient and noninvasive. The disadvantage of an oral pill is that the onset of action is slow (Treas et al., 2018). In this case, prednisone is given to provide immediate relief while allowing Singulair to reach a therapeutic level ( Treas et al., 2018).

Kim is receiving a leukotriene inhibitor (Singular) orally and albuterol because Singular is a medication that affects the inflammatory reaction in the mast cells that line the airways. Singular does not work right away (Singular Oral, n.d.). Albuterol (also known as salbutamol) “is used to treat wheezing and shortness of breath caused by breathing problems such as Asthma. It is a quick-relief medication. Albuterol belongs to a class of drugs known as bronchodilators. It works in the airways by opening breathing passages and relaxing muscles” (Albuterol Sulfate Inhalation, n.d.).
