Mission, vision, and value statements always relate to an organizations purpose. They are mostly communicated through writing. These statements are used to answer questions regarding "who we are", "What is our value", and "what is our direction/where are we heading". Most organizations today have these three statements – mission, vision, and values. This is due to the fact that, research indicates that firms with clearly communicated and understood mission, vision, and value statements are likely to perform and succeed unlike those that don't have. One of such firm is Cedars-Sinai organization, a non-profit organization dealing in health care services.

Cedar-Sinai Mission Statement

A mission statement is always intended to communicate the organization reason for being. Also, it should always aim to indicate how it will serve the key stakeholders such as the community, the clients, the employees, and the investors. As such the mission statement must focus on satisfying the customer needs, define the customers, and define the customers’ needs the organization is satisfying, explain how the organization will serve the customers, and based on the organization competencies. The mission statement should also motivate, be realistic, memorable, and clearly understood.

Cedar-Sinai have clearly outlined the mission statement – " Cedars-Sinai is a non-profit, independent healthcare organization, is committed to improving the health status of the communities we serve through leading in providing excellent and high quality health care services, conducting medical research, educating and training physicians and other healthcare professionals, and providing benefits to the underserved communities" This mission statement is not only short, clear, and understandable, but also communicates how Cedar-Sinai intends to serve the clients. Some of the great takeaways of the mission is the approaches it considers to achieve its goal as well as being effective; education, providing quality services, conducting medical researches, and benefiting the underserved populations.

Cedar-Sinai Vision Statement Assessment

A vision statement is a future-oriented statement that declares the purpose and aspirations of the organization. Unlike the mission statement which lays the foundation of "reason for being", vision statement lays what the organization intends to become based on that purpose – "what do we want to become". A vision statement, therefore, calls for a strategy to be used by the organization to become what intends. As a mission statement, it should equally be brief, understandable, and effective.

The Cedars-Sinai vision is to be the leading healthcare organization in Los Angeles and enhance its position to be recognized leader among the United States most respected, admired, and trusted healthcare organizations in the United States. Cedar-Sinai strategy to achieve this is through demonstrating national leadership by offering quality healthcare services, driving transformation and innovation in healthcare delivery by engaging the patients, advancing frontiers of medicine through medical research, and expanding and strengthening its regional, national, and international position as a model health system. This vision statement fulfills the requirements of a vision statement because it is future casting, audacious, motivating, purpose-driven, inspiring, and capitalizes on unique competencies.

Cedar-Sinai Vision Statement Assessment

It is important as well for an organization to have value statement which either reaffirms or state the organization values that might have not been captured in the mission and vision statements. Values are the emotionally invested beliefs by an organization. They act as the guiding principles of an organization. In pursuit of the Cedars-Sinai vision the actions of the employees, leaders, and the physicians are guided by integrity, excellence, collaboration, respect, compassion, innovation, stewardship, efficiency, and diversity respect. These values provide the guidelines to which the organization will depend on to achieve its vision and accomplish its mission.
