Cultural consideration is important in the process of taking the history, treatment, and physical assessment of culturally diverse people. The examination of these people brings numerous problems that health professionals need to address to establish a precise physical assessment and treatment plan that can be acceptable by ethnic minority clients ( Debesay et al., 2014 ). The examination of minority clients has layers of diversity when compared with examining nonminority patients, particularly when the client has a different ethnic background from the health professional.
During my internship, I faced a challenging situation when taking history on one of my ethnic minority clients on his development and family. When I asked the client to describe his origin, primary language, religion, and traditional roles, the patient finds difficulties communicating in English and expressed himself in his first language. Since I did not understand anything, I had to involve someone who could understand the language so that he could interpret it for me. This case made me understand the difficulties ethnic minority clients experience when communicating with a person from a different ethnic background or negotiating with other people from nonminority groups.

The cultural phenomenon is something that happens when certain people behave in a certain way simply because other people are doing so. The three common cultural phenomena include communication, time, and environmental control. Communication is a significant phenomenon in culture (Vandan et al., 2019). This is because cultures are developed through communication and is a mean of human interaction through which cultural characteristics are developed or shared. Likewise, time is also a cultural phenomenon that was created by people to measure the gap between events based on the standard of measure. Finally, environmental control is another cultural phenomenon that enables people to plan their activities that manage their environment and the perception of a person’s ability to direct factors in the environment. To achieve a better outcome of my client, I could have availed an interpreter from the ethnic background of the client to make him more comfortable and further provide information about his history without difficulties.
