Counseling involves the professional guidance of a client by use of psychological skills. Its nature is focused on retrieving problems and looking for appropriate ways of solving the issue. Therefore, the nature of work itself makes it prone to many challenges. First, some clients find it difficult to express themselves thus making it difficult for a trained counselor to find appropriate solutions. Also, some clients present many problems that might require more than one session to find any meaningful answers. Therefore, this makes counseling a cumbersome and tiresome profession. Since the counselors are not magicians, they can be overwhelmed especially when dealing with serious issues such as suicidal ideation and the profoundly emotional clients.

Amidst their challenges, counselors must ensure that they face their problems ethically. When dealing with potentially debilitating issues such as potential suicides, counselors must remain keen to uphold confidentiality. They do not provide information relating to clients elsewhere irrespective of how serious the problem can be. In further enhancing ethical practice amidst their challenges, counselors will at all times leverage autonomy as their basis of operation. Even when the counselor believes that they have the best solution, they can only use them under the consent of the client.

My impression of the challenges is that they can always be solved no matter how difficult they seem. From reading the literature, it remains apparent that counselors, just like any other professionals, face significant difficulties when dealing with their clients. However, they should firmly understand what might be a problem for one counselor might not necessarily be a problem to the other. Therefore, in my opinion, counselors should have a system of referrals where they direct a client once they are unable to solve their problems as required. As such, this will reduce the likelihood of the challenges facing these professionals leading to a positive working environment.
