Discussion 1: Jasmine

Nociceptive pain identified in Jasmine’s discussion highlights some of the factors that would impact the pathophysiology of pain. For instance, inflammatory response, chemicals within the body, and physical injury can activate pain in the nociceptive nerve fibers (Witherspoon, 2017). In this case, it is evident that the potential damage to the various parts of the body will impact how pain presents itself. The types of pain also influence the pathophysiology of pain and in so doing affect the way the duration and nature of how pain is experienced. Acute pain is initiated quickly and also ends quickly hence its impact can be short-lived (Mitchell, Adebajo, Hay, & Carr, 2015). Chronic and referred pain may help in the diagnosis and treatment options offered. In this case, the fact that chronic pain occurs for more than 6 months the behavior of the individual may be utilized to diagnose and provide extensive medication and care to ensure alleviation of pain. In referred pain, the medical workers may have to undertake special diagnoses like MRI tests to identify the pain caused by a tumor. The age and gender of the patient as it influences the pathophysiology of pain should also be considered in the diagnosis and treatment process.

Discussion 2: Emily

Emily’s discussion identifies pain as a symptom of injuries and diseases. However, as per the scholar’s depiction pain should be considered subjective and unique in every patient. Emily recognizes the function of the nervous system as a primary factor that influences the pathophysiology of pain where it plays a major role in detecting, analyzing, and transmitting information. The afferent pathway, interpretive center, and the efferent pathways are particularly important in ensuring that pain is experienced differently in patients (Mao & Kitz, 2017). The discussion also highlights that other than the physiological aspects, the individual’s gender, race, and age will influence perception of pain. In turn, these factors impact the diagnosis and treatment process. In this identification, it is important to recognize that older adults are more sensitive to pain hence the need to provide stronger medication (Reid, 2015). Nurse practitioners take into consideration the fact that pain is subjective and individually experienced in each patient. As a result, the diagnosis and treatment process should be offered independently for the patient.
