With the Affordable Care Act (ACA), all Americans are insurable since it demands insurance companies to accept all applicants at rates based on averages of the population notwithstanding the status of health. Also, it enables states to increase Medicaid for needy families, thus, raising coverage. Further, there is an increase in coverage since the Act subsidizes private insurance for individuals who are not necessarily destitute but lack workplace coverage. Because of the enactment of the Act, many uninsured individuals have received coverage. The act, however, has resulted in dynamics that are impacting medical practice. Therefore, changes need to be made to make the Act more effective.

The first change that I would recommend is increasing the fines that individuals face if they fail to purchase insurance. Essentially, under the ACA, enrolling in health insurance is a legal obligation. However, since the fines for not registering are minimal as compared to paying an annual insurance plan, many young and healthy people opt not to pay for insurance (Cassidy, 2016) . Instead, they accept the penalty. Private insurance markets typically function appropriately when a substantial and diversified risk pool exists — as such, raising the fines for non-compliance is essential if we intend to depend on private insurers to supply universal coverage.

Secondly, Medicare for all should be introduced. This could be created for those who do not have health insurance that is sponsored by the employer. It would be given as Medicare is provided today. Employers could take the plan for their workers by paying a certain fee that will cover most of their employees’ cost (Toussaint, 2016) . However, they would not be dictated to do so.

To sum up, some parts of ACA are successful in addressing health care issues. However, changes need to be made to make the Act more effective to everyone.
