In the texts, “The Way to Wealth Summary” by Benjamin Franklin and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown” the reader notices some of the struggles that people go through for purposes of meeting the lifetime objectives. Considerably, success in life is as a result of positive intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Intrinsic factors are those inner values that will propel someone towards success. On the other hand, the extrinsic aspect refers to the external conditions that aim at ensuring that the person’s inner factors towards success are supported positively. Through Father Abraham and Young Goodman Brown, the reader understands how some societal aspects act as a hindrance to achievements such as those highlighted in the American Dream.

In his text, Benjamin Franklin uses the character Father Abraham to epitomize some of the matters that relate to the American Dream. According to many people, success is perceived based on one’s monetary gains. However, in his words, Father Abraham believes that it is important for people to focus on how they manage their time ( Franklin, 1800 ). The tenets of the American Dream were meant to ensure that success is gained through ethical means. Arguably, what Father Abraham emphasizes on this text is that when people are keen on time management, then it is easy for one to achieve the success that they desire. However, on the other hand, as a result of misinterpreting the objectives of the American Dream, some people are not serious with time management and this is an aspect that acts as a barrier to success.

Goodman Brown in the text shows how some of the cultural and spiritual beliefs could impede one's success. In the American Dream, it is believed that success depends on one's choice. However, when reading about Brown's experiences, it is seen that in this society, there are the Puritans that hoodwinked people based on misinterpretations of the Bible ( Hawthorne, 2012) . In some instances, someone may fail to concentrate on his or her ambitions because of a specific form of culture or traditions that are considered popular. The chance of Brown to succeed in life was influenced negatively by the Puritan beliefs which many people believed dogmatically.

In the case of the ‘American Dream,' the initiators wanted to ensure that the inner traits of a person such as hard work are not affected negatively by an unsupportive society. The role of the ‘American Dream' is to allow people to be successful based on their output and this is the situations that are highlighted through the experiences of specific character experience in the above two texts.
