Regarding the attackers, I believe most are considered to be self-radicalized. Long-term statistics disclose the percentage of unaffiliated assaults or assaults committed by persons unaffiliated to any extremist group has increased from under 5% to beyond 70% between 2014 and 2018 (Kluch & Vaux, 2016). The assaults are typically conducted by a self-radicalized person mainly through the Internet, instead of in-person interaction with other far-right persons or institutions. Moreover, they capture the world’s attention through internet-publicized decapitations and forced religious change.
