Gender identity affects every aspect of our lives, from the conversations we have, relationships and how we are perceived in the society. Even before infants are given names, their gender already dictates a lot about their young lives. The society has adopted cisgender as the conventional approach to gender, which implies that one must behave according to his/her birth gender. A cisgendered society views being transgender as abnormal, such that transgender people are not given the same opportunities as cisgender individuals. Gender is a social construct, and it does not make sense to adhere to a cisgender approach at the expense of transgender individuals who do not identify with their birth genders.

With the recent bathroom debate on whether to allow transgender people on cisgender bathrooms, cisgender/transgender conflict worsened. Cisgender individuals act as is being cisgender is normal or the right thing while being transgender is wrong to an extent where transgender women are not allowed to use the same bathrooms as cisgender women. Transgender individuals are straight unlike other groups within the LGBTQ, and it does not make sense to deny them equal opportunities as cisgender individuals.

Using a cisgender perspective of human body continue to perpetuate discriminatory actions against transgender people. When transgender people reveal that they are transgender, they are treated weirdly to the point where curious individuals want to see their genitalia. Transgender women are considered women only when they look like cisgender women, but when they still have masculine physical traits, they are still considered men. Transgender people go through many problems on a daily basis just because they are transgender, and yet cisgender people do not face the same problems. A cisgender person does not have to worry about what kind of bathroom he/she is allowed to use in a restaurant or worry about being stared at in public for no reason.

Given the many numbers of transgender people in the society today, it does not make sense to keep using a cisgender conception of human body. Transgender people know that they were born in the wrong gender, and coming out is one of the hardest decisions they face. After coming out, transgender people have to suffer direct and indirect discrimination from their families and the society at large because cisgender individuals view cisgender as the normal way. Cisgender is no longer the only normal way, as transgender individuals are normal people too. Just because the cisgender approach is the conventional approach, it does not imply that being transgender is wrong.

In conclusion, the LGBTQ community is part of the modern society. LGBTQ still face many challenges, but they have come a long way from the days when being gay or transgender was a crime. Transgender individuals face many problems in that they are treated as abnormal by cisgender individuals just because they were born differently. Cisgender individuals have to change their perspective and acknowledge that being cisgender does not make the right or authentic over transgender people. Transgender people are normal individuals that do not need to be judged because of their birth gender. Some transgender choose to transition medically, while others choose not to do so, but their identity does not rely on their reproductive organs. Cisgender individuals should educate themselves on cisgender privilege so that they can be more supportive of the transgender community.
