The significance of this source is that it dwells on a topic that was considered controversial in the early 19 th century. Since this course is on historical studies, the source is important in exploring the debate on birth control. Margaret Sanger was a pioneer of Planned Parenthood and advocated teaching women birth control techniques so that they can have the number of children they are able to support. Sanger had to endanger her liberty in order to bring birth control information to the women who require it the most, the poor and less educated.

This topic touches on poverty, which is something I care the most about. Sanger correlates large families with poverty because when women have many children they cannot support, poverty tends to increase. She uses her personal story to highlight how a huge families struggle. Following the death of her mother, Sanger had to take care of her siblings when she was aged 16 years. Her mother died from the strain of having many children and being overworked. This article is also related to the contribution of high populations to global poverty, which I learnt in another class. When the population is large, the pressure on resources also becomes high, which explains the high poverty rates in populous countries. Personally, I relate to this article because I feel bad for these women who had to give birth to children they did not want. They lacked health resources such as birth control, which modern women take for granted. Additionally, they had no information on birth control, which is currently easily available. Finally, this article is related to the current debate on abortion, which has been carried by mainstream media. Though some countries have legalized abortion, it still remains contentious in countries such as the United States. With birth control, the need for abortion is greatly diminished.
