Effective communication is essential in all industries and aspects of life. The criminal justice system has the role of ensuring law enforcement. During their operations, law enforcers have communication channels such as the radios to ensure messages are passed clearly. The process of communication entails sender, message, encoding, media, decoding, receiver, feedback, and noise. Therefore, proper training in communication skills is necessary to ensure an effective criminal justice system. In the process of communication, there are barriers such as language, personal, and organizational barriers. Since communication is vital in the criminal justice field, the personnel needs to understand the communication cycle and its obstacles overcome them.

For communication to take place effectively, there has to be the sender, message, medium, and feedback. The sender starts the conversation by creating and conveying a message to the receiver (Nordquist, p. 1, 2018). The message is then encoded in pictures, gestures, or words before transmission. The message is then spread via a media channel, which can be e-mail, internet, or telephone-based on the sender’s decision. The message is then decoded to the receiver, the last person in the communication cycle who then understands the message and acts accordingly, thus proving that the communication process is successful (Nordquist, p. 2, 2018). After receiving the message, the receiver sends a response to ensure the communication process is complete. Noise is any form of destruction that may hinder proper communication processes such as faulty network and poor comprehension.

In the process of communication, barriers are inevitable. In the criminal justice system, the common barrier is organizational. One may have information but hold onto it because they cannot get to the receiver directly due to the organizational structure (Brough et al., 2015, p. 53). A personal barrier is also a hindrance in the criminal justice system, notably, when superiors hold back a message because of the adverse effects, it may have on their leadership. The language barrier is also common in this field. For instance, suppose an officer is supposed to apprehend a suspect, but a language barrier exists between them, both will have a hard time getting along.

In conclusion, communication is significant in all industries. The communication process involves the sender, media, and receiver. The message has to be clear for the receiver to ensure misunderstanding. In the process of communication, there are barriers involved that include language, organizational, and personal obstacles. Therefore, since communication is essential in the criminal justice field, the personnel needs to understand the communication cycle and its barriers to overcome them.
