Discussion Question 1
I agree with the statement that coaching and nursing should be a core competency for nurses. The advanced practice nurse (APN) is at the forefront of their professional expertise and it is expected that they should provide coaching and mentoring to other staff members. This would be beneficial for the new nurse that are less experienced to gain new experiences regarding their various roles. Huggins (2016) observes that coaching is used to enhance the education of nursing students. It provides a way for learning and growth and a way to develop successful career paths for individuals being coached and mentored.
As the Family Nurse Practitioner, one coaching routine that I can use to provide guidance on my team members. For the team members, I would provide coaching to ensure that they are providing safe and effective care to the patients. Additionally, I would ensure that there are frequent meetings and during those meetings would try to update the team regarding the progress of patients. The meetings would also be used to answer specific questions that one of my team members could have regarding the difficulties that patients have. In short, I would try to coach my team members on the delivery of quality care.

The mentoring activity that would be done with the mentor to acclimate to the new role would be incorporating evidence-based nursing approach into nursing. Brooke and Mallion (2016) observe that there is a need for nurse to develop the ability to incorporate the needs and wishes of patients through evidence-based care. The mentorship program will thus involve being shown about the techniques and proper ways to incorporate evidence-based practice. The program could be done in the hospital setting and in a practical situation where there will be an easy transfer of knowledge.
Discussion Question 2
Consultation and supervision are two different terms that can be understood by considering their definitions. Consultation can be defined as the process of a nurse practitioner meeting with another practitioner that has more expert knowledge so as to help with the care for the patient. On the other hand, supervision occurs when an individual in a higher job position oversees the working of another individual under them (Rudner & Kung, 2017). Consultation involves having equal parties working together while supervision is more of a vertical and hierarchical approach where one of the individuals is in a higher job position. Clinical supervisors are usually legally accountable for the actions of the individuals they supervise while there is no such accountability in consultation.
Consultation and collaboration are not synonymous and are applied differently in nursing practice. Consultation could be in the form of a mentoring relationship where one party advises another to accomplish a goal. Collaboration involves a partnership where two or more individuals work together toward the accomplishing of a specific goal. A consultation could be relatively simple where it is a one-time project and there is no need of repeated contact while a collaboration may require a long-term research partnership (Nowell, 2016).
The consultation competency has been practice in my current area of ambulatory surgery. Consultation has been applied where the consultant renders advice to the consultee who can choose to discard or use the advice. The nursing practitioners use consultation throughout the assessment, diagnosis, and evaluation of patients. Such a process has been used to realize several benefits such as increased patient satisfaction and better patient outcomes. The practice followed the graduate competency criteria as the nurses were able to have an environment that facilitated their growth and progress. The nursing outcomes of improved patient care also showed that the consultation yielded positive results.
