Interprofessional collaboration occurs when two or more health care professionals work together to achieve a common goal. The interprofession al care practice includes collaboration with other health care providers outside the profession, including the patients and families who work together to promote quality of care (Green & Johnson, 2015). In inter-professional practice, members have the responsibility to introduce new members to the team and offer them adequate support to achieve the set goal successfully. According to Morley & Cashell (2017 ), interprofessional practice is built on the principles of understanding team, the responsibility of other health care professionals, effective communication, conflict management, accountability, and distribution of duties. Collaborative practice in health care is essential since it allows professionals to achieve better results more than they could have achieved individually.

I am a member of the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) which serves as a voice for over 200, 000 African American professionals in registered nurses, licensed/vocational practical nurses, nursing students and retired nurses (NBNA, n.p). The organization involves members from the USA, Canada, Eastern Caribbean, and Africa. The organization collaborates with other health care professionals, private and public organizations that are concerned with improving the health status of all people . In NBNA, health care practitioners collaborate with patients, their families, and care providers to ensure the delivery of quality care. Therefore, the team works towards satisfying the health care needs of the community and patients by providing quality care and treatment. Nurses have the responsibility of assessing, diagnosing, treating, and managing acute and chronic conditions. Also, it is the nurse's role to conduct health promotions and prevent disease infections ( Finkelman, 2017) . According to the NBNA guideline, nurses have the mandate to order, supervise, and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests (NBNA, n.d). Nursing practitioners also have the responsibility to prescribe medication to patients and give non-pharmacologic therapies.

The best inter-professional collaborative approach care for Ms. Tuckerno should have been following effective communication, cooperation, coordination, and mutual trust when making decisions on patient’s treatment ( Morley & Cashell, 2017) . The nursing practitioner and internist lacked adequate coordination, cooperation, and communication when treating Ms. Tuckerno. From the beginning, during diagnosing and issuance of the first treatment, the internist failed to involve the nurse in understanding the patient’s condition and reasons for offering the treatment. According to Prentice et al. (2020), inter-professional practice needs to follow a collaborative guideline to ensure quality care. The two professionals should have worked together to develop a treatment plan for the patients before putting the patient under medication for thyroid diseases, one pill for diabetic, eye drops for glaucoma, and medical cannabis.

Communication is an effective collaborative approach in interprofessional practice that could effectively manage Ms. Tuckerno’s care. The two professionals failed to ensure effective communication when prescribing and adjusting medical treatment. The nursing practitioner should have communicated with the internist and patients to understand the reason for prescribing medication. Since the internist was not in the office, the nursing practitioner should have called or issued the prescribed medicine and wait for the internist to return so that they could discuss the treatment plan together. The internist also failed to communicate and cooperate with the nurse when developing a treatment plan. Lack of communication and collaboration between the two professionals compromised the quality of care and treatment given to the patient ( Morley & Cashell, 2017) . The internist should have consulted the nurse to understand her reasons for changing the medication. Since the two are working together, they need to apply communication approaches of coordination, cooperation, and communication to ensure quality care for Ms. Tuckerno.

In summary, interprofessional care is essential in health care organization since practice ensure health care practitioners work as a team, enhance trust and respect to achieve positive health care outcome. Interprofessional organizations like the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) comprises of members from different professionals and agencies. They come together to satisfy community health needs and ensure quality treatment for patients. Inter-professional collaborative practice should be established on elements of communication, accountability, cooperation, and mutual trust.
