Communication is very useful in the health care sector as a way of relaying information especially from one nurse to another. Effective communication with the previous nurse during shift change improves patient safety by preventing errors in several ways. The previous nurse must be able to hand over accurate, relevant, complete and also timely information of the patient to the incoming nurse. This way, the incoming nurse will have the right information of a patient and take responsibilities from there as they are held accountable for the health of the patient. The nurse will be able to recognize any changes in the patient’s condition and know how to react to the changes (Forbes & Watt, 2015). The previous nurse, therefore, must convey the full picture of the patient’s status as this promotes the safety of the patient. Any interruptions with the information conveyed will definitely have risks to the patient as the incoming nurse will not be fully deal with the patient hence avoiding errors (Luck, 2017).

To track safety standards and prevent errors due to miscommunication, I can make sure that the information conveyed is not oral. Having a written or computerized way of tracking the patient’s record will make it easier for me in monitoring the status of the patient. Chances of making errors will be reduced. Experience with Tina Jones has changed my feelings about communication skills or knowledge. It has clearly shown that effective communication is a fundamental aspect for successful patient care. It also depends on the ability of the nurse to empathize with patients as they find effective ways of translating medical science into personally relevant health information. It is important for nurses to understand the experiences of the patients and feelings and be in a position to communicate this understanding to the patient. However, language strategies used to achieve the goal of empathic communication can vary.
