Effective communication is a crucial tool for use by managers and leaders to guide their organizations to success. It enables managers and leaders to ensure planning, organizing, motivating, and controlling. The morale of employees is boosted in workplaces by the use of good communication. They understand the employment terms and conditions building commitment. Managers and leaders are responsible for ensuring the presence of a reliable and open communication that relays the organization's goals, culture, and proper relationships with clients. Managers and leaders use communication to guide their organizations by sharing essential information, solving problems, effective decision-making, and exchanging ideas for the sole aim of harmony within and outside the organization. Leaders and managers have different roles in an organization and therefore communicate differently (MOL, 2016). This paper analyses a message, channel, and potential for feedback of Mitsui O.S.K Lines CEO's 2016 New Year Message to the company's employees.

The CEO was selling his vision to the employees to influence them to work towards achieving his vision. His message was the need for the employees to be resilient and flexible. That is, relying on the past successful strategies may not guarantee the success of the company. Therefore, the employees should be ready to accommodate changes. He also pointed out that the company strives to be reliable to the customers by ensuring safety. He points out various accidents that have occurred in the past and reminds the employees that the past should not be forgotten. Further, he points out that they need to be competitive by recognizing their strengths and believing in one another. That teamwork is key to the company's success. He encourages the employees to be innovative and gives them the watchwords "One Target, One MOL." This is a driving force for team working.

The channel used to pass this message is face-face communication. This allowed the CEO to interact with the employees one on one; thus, immediate feedback was given. The smaller the chain of communication, the faster the feedback is received. This was an effective way of passing the message to the employees. A channel's effectiveness is determined by its ability to allow an organization to convey a message or to receive feedback from the receivers of the information, its reliability, and the speed (Sanina et al., 2017). Face-to-face communication was reliable and fast, thus an effective channel of passing the information.

Leaders and managers send different types of messages to the employees. The message passed by the CEO would not be similar to the message that a manager would send. This is because leaders sell their visions to the employees while the managers have the employees work for them. A manager plan builds and directs an organization's systems to achieve set goals while a leader focuses on establishing direction, alignment, motivation, and inspiration for employees for organizational success (Nizarudin, 2017). Thus, the CEO will sell his vision to make the employees understand, believe in his vision, and work with him to achieve the organizational goals. A manager's work is to administer and ensure that things run in the organization as expected. Thus, a manager's message will be directive, while a leader's message will be persuasive to make the employees follow him.

In retrospect, communication is of great importance in a business organization. The channel's effectiveness affects communication; lack of feedback is a weakness in a communicative event. Leaders and managers communicate differently to the employees because they play different roles in the organization. It is, however, important for any leader to have leadership and management communication skills to achieve organizational goals.
