Leadership is defined as a process where one person influences a group of people to achieve a particular common goal (De Vries, Bakker-Pieper & Oostenveld, 2010). The Great Mahatma Gandhi was a transformational leader who led by example and empowered his followers to make them feel better. Throughout his life, he united individuals to do the things that they stood for. The spiritual leaders had sufficient confidence and trust in himself and used a non-violent and polite way to confront the law. Without confidence and trust, Mahatma Gandhi could not have done the things he did. During his leadership time, it was all about the follower and not the leaders. His transformational leadership style made his followers feel proud and essential people in the team.

Additionally, Abraham Lincoln, the sixth President of the US was a charismatic, transformational, and democratic leader. As a charismatic leader, he led people by infusing eagerness and energy into their team. He infused energy in people by inspiring others and making them believe in what he believed. At his young age, Lincoln worked as a postmaster, general store owner, and a shopkeeper. Working in public offices made him acquire social skills that made him popular with the locals. Apart from being charismatic, Abraham Lincoln was a transformational leader and a change champion that resulted in the abolishment of slavery. He had remarkable communication ability with a comprehension of people’s concerns. Finally, he was a democratic leader and mostly included his team members in the process of making a decision. In his reign, he had a strong cabinet that even composed of his political rivals. He discussed and exchanged ideas with his cabinet and even involved them decision-making process.

Adolf Hitler once the supreme leader of Germany used directing style in his leadership. In this style, he concentrated more on communicating on the achievements of goals and spent a little time using supportive behaviors. As a leader, he gave instructions about what and how goals were supposed to be achieved by his subordinates while supervising them carefully. He took advantage of his positional power and nobody could oppose him. He manipulated people to think that he was their friend to achieve his goals of extending the boundary of Germany. In light of this goal, he even eliminated certain armies that could stand his way until he later regretted and committed suicide.

Florence Nightingale, a pioneer of nursing and a reformer of hospital sanitation methods was also a transformational leader. She was able to push for reforms in the British military health care system making the profession of nursing to gain respect. She also offered a systematic way of learning and further lead enhancements in both surgical and medical practices. More so, Florence Nightingale was an innovative leader. At the Institute for the Care of Sick Gentlewomen, Florence made a revolutionary innovation by installing a dumbwaiter system. She also demanded the installation of a call-bell system on each hospital story to enable identify which patient wanted their assistance. It was Nightingale’s idea that made the hospital install a boiler system on each store to make it easy for nurses to get water. She continued to offer advice on the best way to manage the field hospitals until his death.

Doctor Karima Velji, the President of the Canadian Nurses Association is notably known for her keen interest in developing as well as testing interventions in research studies. Karima Velji uses a resonant leadership style to guide her practice changes. Apart from the resonant leadership style, Karima Velji is a transformational leader. In her nursing practice, she has received various grants as the principal investigator in the rehabilitation of nursing practice, patient safety, and inter-professional education. As the president of the Canadian Nurses Association, Karima continuously implemented innovations for patient-centered outcomes on models of care as well as quality and safety systems.

The leadership style of Adolf Hitler, Florence Nightingale and Karima Velji differs significantly. Adolf Hitler was a leader that was determined to command individually and the ultimate authority rested with him. On the other hand, Florence Nightingale was a leader that showed uncompromising commitment to serve individuals she led even without necessary resources. Finally, Karima Velji is a leader that is guided by pursuit of evidence to make decisions regarding nursing practice.
