The selected topic and proposed intervention are under community. Community interventions are based in part on their ability to generate health improvements in populations ( Galer-Unti & Tappe, 2019 ). Their target is on the groups considered to be the root cause and burden of illness. They involve a change of policies and practices, among other factors that increase the risk for a specific disease. Also, the topic and the intervention focus on prevention/control and the conditions in correctional facilities that negatively impacts the well-being of the entire population. Community interventions for tuberculosis control involve numerous activities that contribute to the identification of cases, adherence to the treatment protocol, and better outcomes. In addition, they comprise activities that promote health, such as generating demand for tuberculosis prevention and TB diagnosis and treatment services (WHO, 2011).
The proposed intervention involves the timely diagnosis and treatment of inmates with tuberculosis. It also involves access and availability of services related to TB diagnosis and treatment in correctional facilities. The main aim of this intervention is to curb the spread of tuberculosis both inside correctional facilities and outside these facilities, which can be caused by prison/jail staff, visitors, and released inmates. Therefore, the intervention does not only target inmates in a correctional facility but all population groups, families, and specific individuals. Inmates are a vulnerable population, mainly because of their living conditions and status. Based on this, the topic, as well as the intervention, involves strategies in response to the needs of inmates who are at a higher risk.
