H1N1 in Georgia

As recent as January 2019, the state of reported numerous fatalities due to H1N1 also known as the swine flu. By the 16th of January this year, the health ministry in Georgia reported that up to ten people had succumbed to the flu ( Kachkachishvili, 2019) . The state has been affected by the virus for some years with its initial presence being reported in 2009. The initial patient was a woman who had been reported to have been visiting family in Georgia from Kentucky. From then the state reported more than two hundred cases of the flu by July of the same year ( Schneider, 2009) . Since then, Georgia has witnessed numerous cases including fatalities due to H1N1 every year. The many cases that occurred in 2009 resulted in the H1N1 pandemic in the state and these many cases were due to Georgia’s lack of preparedness for the strain of influenza which was relatively new to the state.

The 2009 pandemic represented a lesson for the state on the need to develop mechanisms for the prevention and treatment of the flu and prevent vast numbers of those infected and those who die. The state does experience cases of H1N1 every year, but these cases have not reached the pandemic level that occurred in 2009. The change is due to the strategies in place by the state to prevent its spread. The state initiated preventative measures from an individual level to the state level and has worked towards developing a vaccine for the same ( Schneider, 2009) . The virus spread quickly through schools and colleges and thus the state provides vaccination in these institutions and ensures that whenever there are new cases reported, holidays for students are extended to help combat how fast the virus spreads and eventually eradicate it.
