Queens is a populated borough in the city of New York, and it is technically the most ethnically diverse city throughout the world. The population in Queens includes a mixture of all kinds of races, i.e. Europeans, Whites, Asians, African-Americans, as well as the Native Americans (Joannaeng, 2012).

The major health problem affecting people in this community is diabetes. According to statistics conducted on diabetes in 2003, diabetes directly contributes to close to 2000 deaths annually. In addition, uncontrolled diabetes leads to other serious health problems such as blindness and renal disease. High risk behaviors associated with diabetes are unhealthy diet and physical inactivity, which in most cases leads to obesity. Studies have estimated that diabetes is highly prevalent among the Hispanics, while for the Asians, prevalence is much less.

Health education program that can address the issue of diabetes in Queens.
Considering the high prevalence of diabetes in the community, an education program that can be effective would involve assessment of health individual needs and education of community members on healthy diet and importance of exercises.

Diabetes is highly prevalent among the Hispanics and therefore, for attraction of community members to the education program, it would be convenient for it to take place in a nearby community school such as Woodside Community School. Since Hispanics are extensively family oriented, rather than individualized teaching education would be family-focused (Bastable, 2014). This would encourage them to attend the teaching program
Specific time for the teaching program.
The program would take place on a Saturday, specifically in the evening hours. This is because during weekdays most people are usually busy with work and studies, and the school is usually occupied by students. Therefore, a weekend would be convenient for everyone involved in the program, and most especially the community members.
Interpersonal skills required by the educator for effective teaching.
An excellent educator should be able to work with different kinds of people of all ages and races. The educator should have extra-ordinary interpersonal skills such as speaking and listening skills in order to be able to interact effectively with the patients. Moreover, appropriate and effectively placed humor is a perfect way of keeping the community members eager and motivated to learn since it creates and keeps the attention required. Body language and non-verbal communication will make the session more interesting. In addition to these, expressing care and concern for the community members will encourage the patients to practice various solutions taught by the educator, which can help reduce the health and economic burden caused by diabetes ("5 Necessary Interpersonal Skills for Teachers | Life | SuccessStory," n.d.).

David Herrick, who is a member of the board of directors of American Diabetes Association would be an excellent partner for this kind of program since given his qualifications, he has great experience with issues regarding diabetes.
Thoughts and feelings about teaching in my own community
Teaching people who hail from the same community as me is very inspiring and it makes me feel like am giving back to my community.
Interesting and useful lessons learnt about teaching groups of patients.
Teaching a group of patients does not only involve passing information onto them, but also interacting with them and showing them that they are important. Additionally, teaching a group requires adequate preparation and patience, because as it was learnt earlier different people have different learning styles. Accommodating the different styles of learning of different people ensures positive outcomes of a teaching program.
What has changed regarding my belief in my ability to educate a group of patients.
At the beginning of the semester, I though educating a group of patients is the most difficult endeavor that I can ever come across in my profession. However, as more knowledge was accumulated throughout the semester, I have come to learn and understand that patient education is not as hard as it seems, and with relevant materials, adequate preparation and self-confidence, it can turn out to be an interesting activity.
