The support group I visited was World Vision Autism Centre. It is a support center for autism and runs weekly autism support group sessions. Some of the challenges the support group talked about include: Complexities in explaining the cause of autism, difficulty in accessing health test centers for individuals suffering from autism, inadequate or low availability of treatment services and autism-friendly social facilities and finally forgotten autistic adults.

Many parents to autistic children in the support group were concerned about having a definitive answer concerning the cause of autism. They complained about having a difficult time creating awareness in their weekly autism awareness drives which they have in the local gymnasium in a bid to prompt organizations to create environmentally friendly spaces for autistic individuals. Their greatest concern was the myths and misconceptions associated with autism that result in stigmatization. Access to autism specialized health test centers was also a challenge as the majority of the hospitals were not equipped to deal with autistic patients effectively. Many complained that they had to travel miles to access autism specialized health centers. They also expressed the need for more autism-friendly centers for higher learning, workplaces and social facilities. Majority of these centers have been more focused on other disabilities and have neglected individuals living with autism. One outstanding challenge that was also pointed out was the fact that these individuals lamented on being forgotten. They said that their place in society as autistic adults was completely overlooked. While society has a keen interest and focuses on children, adults have been completely forgotten.

The support group for adults living with autism is different from that of children because it is issue based. Usually, a support group for children is generally more about play, interaction and building skills and friendships. For adults it’s more about emotional, physical and general psychosocial support.
