The three terms that can be applied to the poems by Emily Dickinson and Whitman’s are tone, voice and readers response. The tone represents the attitude of the narrator. Dickson’s tone in her poem is friendly. Whitman’s tone is emotional. This can be seen in paragraph four in which he declares how deep his love for the cities, people and the people is. Example, I loved well those cities, loved well the stately and rapid river (Shurr, 2015). In both the poems, the voice is coming from the poets, who a narrating the poem to the audience a view of certain events. Whitman explains the journey of a man on Brooklyn Ferry while Dickson explains how a change in season affects lives of creatures such as birds (Bevilacqua, 2015). In the view of the reader’s response concerning Dickinson’s poem “There are the days when birds come back,” the coming of summer evokes religious feelings in her mind. The real summer and its serenity have something divine.
In Emily Dickinson’s poem “These are the days when the birds come back,” the central idea about it is the end of the summer and the beginning of fall season. She says, “ These are the days when skies resume.” During this time, the birds migrate to different countries because of a change in season. The poem shows the real appearance of time. Crossing Brookline Ferry is a poem about a man heading home from Manhattan with his Brooklyn Ferry.

Both the two poets are successful in their work of art. I would prefer Emily Dickinson over Whitman because of her simplicity in the way she presents her message. Understanding her poem is easy because it is short and straight to the point. Whitman uses nine paragraphs in his poem with some vocabularies.
