Change is inevitable in all aspects of life. In this regard, a number of change theories have been developed, such as Lewin’s three-step change theory, social cognitive theory, and Lippitt Phases of Change theory. This paper will delve into comparing and contrasting two change theories, namely, Lewin’s three-step change theory and social cognitive theory. In addition, the paper will explore the suitability of these two theories in implementing evidence-based practice projects in nursing.
As the name suggests, Lewin's three-step change theory is composed of three steps, namely, unfreezing, changing, and refreezing (Kritsonis, 2005). According to Kurt Lewin, the developer of this theory, the process of change involves creating the perception that a change is needed (Kritsonis, 2005). This is then followed by creating a new, desired level of behavior. The last step entails solidifying the new behavior as the norm. As seen, this theory focuses on the roles of driving and restraining forces in the changing behavior of people.

Unlike Lewin's three-step change theory, the social cognitive theory stresses the significance of the environment, personality, and attitudes in modifying the behavior of a person (Beauchamp et al., 2019). This theory holds that a person should be self-motivated as well as possess self-efficacy in order to change. In addition, this theory is founded on the assumption that behavior is motivated by the consequences (Beauchamp et al., 2019). This assumption is what differentiates social cognitive theory from Lewin's three-step theory. The latter is pragmatic, balanced, and goal-oriented (Beauchamp et al., 2019). It does not take into account the personality or attributes of a person. However, both theories take into account the role of external factors in influencing behavior change of a person. Lewin’s change theory is the best fit for my EBP intervention. This theoretical model provides a theoretical framework that can be used to conduct my EBP intervention. In this regard, this theoretical model will be very useful. My preceptor has not used either theory.

Michele Aldridge,
Great post on the discussion about change theories. You have clearly outlined, compared and contrasted two change theories, namely, Lewin’s three-step change theory and Roger’s Innovation Diffusion theory. The former is composed of three steps, while the latter is composed of five steps. I would like to add that the Rogers Innovation Diffusion theory relies heavily on human capital. In contrast, Lewin’s change theory focuses on the roles of driving and restraining forces in the changing behavior of people (Kritsonis, 2005). You have also clearly outlined which change theory the two makes the most sense for implementing your specific evidence-based project intervention. Overall, you have composed an excellent post.

Barbara Fink,
Great post on this week’s discussion post, which involves comparing and contrasting two change theories. You have clearly outlined, compared, and contrasted two change theories, namely, the transtheoretical model of change by DiClemente and Prochaska and Lewin’s three-step change model. I would like to add that the transtheoretical model is based on the assumption that change does not occur quickly and decisively but continuously through a cyclical process (Kritsonis, 2005). You have also clearly outlined which change theory is a better fit for your EBP intervention. Overall, you have composed an excellent post on changed theories.

Emma Kimba,
Great post on this week’s discussion prompt. You have clearly identified, compared, and contrasted two change theories, namely, the Health Promotional Model theory and the Self-Efficacy theory. I agree with you that these two theories are widely used in healthcare settings to facilitate positive patient outcomes and changes. I would like to add that the Health Promotion Model is based on three major concepts, namely, the individual’s characteristics and experience, the prior related behavior, and frequency of the similar behavior in the past. You have also clearly outlined the change theory is most suitable for your EBP intervention. Overall, you have composed an excellent post.
