Nursing theories have a great impact on the manner in which nursing is conducted today. The theories guide nursing care, research and learning. There are plenty of nursing theories in existence. However, for this discussion post, I will be comparing Watson’s theory of Human Caring and Orem Theory (Melanie & Wills, 2018).

Watson’s Theory

According to Watson’s theory of caring is considered a moral and ethical obligation in nursing with personal and humanistic qualities. Watson stated that human caring illustrates and appreciates the patient as a human being with a mind, soul and body. Watson argues that there should be a special bond between the nurses and the patients for effective care to be delivered. The role of the nurses is to help nurses acquire a conviction of accord and a balance within themselves (Melanie & Wills, 2018).

Orem’ theory

According to Orem’s theory of self-care, every individual has the responsibility to adjust and maintain personal health and wellness. The theory provides five ways in which nurse can help patients in enhancing their self-care, teaching, supporting and promoting personal development(Melanie & Wills, 2018).

Similarities

The two theories are similar in the greatest scenes since they do aim to help provide care for the patients. They aim to protect, enhance and preserve humanity. It is the role of the nurses to help patients to find a balance and harmony and self-control. They both provide guidelines to help nurses to deliver better services. They both argue that care is effective if both the nurses and the patients are effectively involved (Melanie & Wills, 2018).

Difference

Watson theory of care is more complex, and involves the use of many theoretical questions. The theory embraces, art, spirituality and while Orem’s theory is structured into three categories self-care, self-care deficit and nursing process. Watson’s theory cannot be statistically measured while Orem’s theory can be measured (Melanie & Wills, 2018).
