Concept Analysis

After watching the frontline episode, “College, Inc” one can attest that for-profit colleges target post-secondary population, and are just interested in enrolling students. They do not have the necessary considerations about the student’s admission. Additionally, such colleges are not concerned whether the students would graduate, be employed, or whether they are capable of paying back their student loans. Moreover, most for-profit college population account for federal loan defaulters and have huge attrition rates. Those who attend for-profit colleges are generally low-income students who are between the ages of 18 and 26 (Lang & Weinstein, 2012). The students’ total household income is below or near the poverty level. Nevertheless, one major advantage of the pro-profit colleges is that they reach out to the students who are socioeconomically disadvantaged. The colleges tend to help such students to step up into the middle class, by promising them good career; however, they do not keep up to the promise.

For-profit colleges exploit students who do not understand the multifaceted hierarchy of the American post secondary education. Further, the colleges target those who do not know the difference college rankings as well as those who are unfamiliar with the higher education culture. Thus, these students pay and borrow out of ignorance. For-profit colleges engage in deceptive marketing of how could help students join community colleges, while others can have the opportunity to be trained by employers for "Gainful Employment". Notably, “Gainful Employment” refers to when such students are able find jobs that can make them cater for themselves and take care of their needs in the society. Generally, employers can be at the forefront in reducing the demand for these colleges and career schools by informing them of the alternatives that can offer careers and good education.

Discussion Forum

My reaction after watching the clip frontline episode “Separate & Unequal” is that segregation still exists in most schools. Growing up I experienced violence in the public schools. Further, to many who attended public institutions, the video might not be news or shocking, because they have encountered such in one way or the other. Most of such schools lack the basic amenities, which are found in private district schools. The happening in the clip accurately portray what takes place most of the time in our society. Moreover, such incidences lead to many parents and students preferring private institutions to avoid the violence. Similar to the video, parents prefer to have a separate district where they can have closer monitor of their children progress in the institutions. The rising income inequality in the society makes those at the top to take advantage. Nonetheless, such arrangements have repercussions to the growth of children and education. The creation of district schools lead to inequalities in different social classes. Moreover, the actions lead to segregation and creation of social classes in the society; therefore, the middle and upper class get to be separated from the low class people (Ackert, 2018). As such, it is necessary to advocate for race interconnections, to prevent further disintegration in the schools and society. The creation of new district schools should focus on better education and diversity is important to make the children grow up appreciating others.
